Friday Reflections: On Food…
Ok, ok — so it’s not exactly a groundbreaking take, but hear me out. And whilst I’ve got you, this one’s a bit of a biggie, so pour yourself a cup of something delicious and get comfy…
There’s something I’ve been turning over lately about food culture in the UK, and how somewhere along the line we may have been slightly mis-sold the story.
We’ve been taught, subtly but persistently, that cooking for ourselves is a chore. Something squeezed in at the end of a long day. Something to “get out of the way” as quickly and efficiently as possible. And in its place, a culture of convenience has taken hold; ready meals, takeaway apps, hyper-speed eating… food as fuel rather than experience.
Of course, life is busy. Really busy. Many of us are juggling work, family, responsibilities, and the constant background hum of modern life. It’s not always easy to carve out the time or money to shop, prepare, and cook from scratch, let alone do it well and that reality deserves acknowledging. But I can’t shake the feeling that in all the rushing, we’ve lost something quietly essential.
Because cooking isn’t just about feeding ourselves, it never really was. It’s one of the oldest forms of expression we have. A way of saying “I care,” “I’m here,” “you matter.” Whether it’s a slow-cooked meal for friends, a simple breakfast with family, or taking a bit of time to properly nourish ourselves, it can be an act of presence, gratitude, and connection. One of love, kindness and generosity.
When we strip it back, there’s something deeply human about it; using our hands, our senses, our attention. Tasting as we go, adjusting, learning, passing things down, sitting together, sharing stories across a table. These aren’t just nice extras they’re part of what helps us feel rooted and connected.
And maybe that’s what gets lost in a culture of convenience. Not just the quality of the food, but the experience around it. The slowing down. The intention. The small rituals that anchor us in the day.
But it’s not all doom and gloom and It feels important to recognise that there are people and places working to shift this narrative right here in North Edinburgh.
Organisations like Lauriston Farm, Granton Community Gardeners, Edinburgh Community Food, and Granton Castle Walled Garden and many more are all, in their own ways, helping to reframe our relationship with what we eat and where it comes from. They’re creating spaces where people can reconnect with the land, with growing, with sharing food, and with each other.
And that feels hopeful.
This isn’t about rejecting convenience altogether or striving for some idealised version of domestic life. It’s about remembering that cooking doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Even the simplest meal, made with a bit of care, can hold something deeper.
Maybe the invitation is just to reclaim a small piece of it. To see cooking not as another task on the list, but as an opportunity however small, to reconnect.
What are your thoughts on this?

Continuing Volunteers’ Week 2026, we want to take a moment to celebrate the energy and dedication of our volunteer Ann!
Ann has run our Gentle Exercise and Pilates groups for ages, and twice per week offers lovely moments to step away from the stresses of daily life, unwind, and have fun.
We love her quote that;
“Volunteering defies the laws of physics for me – I get more out of it than I put in.”
Feedback from the group lets us know they get loads from it too, Ann! A perfect combination. 😊
So, here’s to you, Ann! Thanks for all you do!

What a beautiful idea.
I’ve never seen one of these before. A wind phone. Si King shared it on Instagram the other day.
I think it might be a Japanese idea originally where there’s a disconnected phone in a garden.
People go there to talk to the people they’ve lost. Not because anyone answers or because it “fixes” grief.
Just because sometimes love needs somewhere to go. I think that’s beautiful.
We spend so much time pretending we’re fine, moving on, staying busy, “being strong”
Meanwhile, a little old rotary phone in the wind is quietly reminding people that missing someone is normal. That continuing the conversation is normal.
Love it x
