In an industry where no qualification is required, William Downing chose to get one anyway.

He's not the first in the family to make that choice.

Years before William sat his Diploma in Funeral Directing, his father did the same. Not because anyone asked him to. Not because the law required it. Because he believed that the families trusting N.E. Downing with the most important day of their lives deserved someone who held themselves to account.

William grew up watching that. And he's carried it forward.

Four generations of the Downing family have served the Black Country. Each one has passed something down, not just a business, but a belief that this profession deserves to be taken seriously. That standards matter. That the families we serve are owed more than the minimum.

With regulation coming to the funeral industry, some directors are preparing to meet the bar.
