Understanding the Impact:
When Experience and Diagnosis Meet Compassion.
"I wish they understood me"
"I've never felt accepted"
Heartbreaking statements that I've heard too many times from the young people sat with me in therapy.
One of the most common themes that arises in conversations with these young people and their parents or carers is the longing for understanding, not only of a diagnosis, but also the lived impact of experience.
When a child’s behaviour is seen only as a problem to fix, we miss the story it’s trying to tell. Behind every shutdown, every outburst, every silence, there is a nervous system doing its best to cope with what life has asked of it.
For many, that story includes trauma, loss, or the daily exhaustion of navigating a world that doesn’t fit the way their brain works.
Understanding the impact of experience or diagnosis means shifting from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What’s happened to you".
It means considering how their experience has shaped the way they see and feel the world.
It’s a movement from judgement to curiosity, from correction to connection.
The young people often describe the relief that comes when they begin to feel seen, heard and understood.
For professionals, greater understanding transforms practice.
It reminds us that safety and stabilisation come before correction or change.
When we understand the impact on the survival system of experience or diagnosis, we stop trying to make young people fit into systems that weren’t built for them.
Instead, we begin to build systems that fit around them.
You can't change survival behaviours until you address whats causing the need to survive.
