This (hot) morning in our series of posts where we look back on Saturday's Lancastria Memorial event, we want to mention some of the honorable guests and moments of the day.

The event was opened by Lieutenant Colonel David William Dawber, TD DL - on behalf of His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire Mrs. Elizabeth Fothergill CBE.
He discussed the significance of remembrance events and the links that still exist 86 years on, of many family members and people present to the events of the tragedy.

Following moving speeches by Luke Parker and Bruce Spencer, Lt Col David Dawber unveiled the memorial that was designed and created by Acres as a lasting tribute to those that were lost, and indeed those that survived.

We then welcomed to the Lectern His Excellency Jean Claude Lafontain - The Honorary French Consul for the East Midlands region to deliver an emotional French perspective of the tragedy to the guests.

Derbyshire engineering firm unveils moving memorial to ‘forgotten’ World War Two maritime disaster

Today marks the start of Armed Forces Week - the run-up to Armed Forces Day, which takes place on the last Saturday each June, falling this year on Saturday 27th.

It is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.

It also marks the culmination of a week of celebrations, beginning on Monday 22 June, when the public show their support and appreciation for the Armed Forces community. It also includes Reserves Day (24 June), which provides the country with an opportunity to recognise our Reserve Forces.
