The Southern Gateway might be considered a 'Flagship' project as it provides the walking/cycling entrance to Crewe town centre (that's what's on the sign) for visitors arriving by rail. The cost was in the region of £3m (please correct if this is inaccurate).

Our members have already litter picked here several times and, again, today, the bins are full and there is litter strewn across the beds and in and alongside the meadow (which, by the way, is still looking beautiful and attracting lots of insects). None of the trees has been watered recently (all the bags are empty).

It is almost as if the extra maintenance required for more bins and vegetation is not taken into account when a project is being considered and costed.

We'll have members out everyday this week and as part of their litter picking they will remove potentially dangerous cans and bottles from tinder-dry grass. They will, no doubt, come across discarded cigarette ends on the same grass and they will wonder how close we came to a very avoidable fire.

Yvonne was out on Sunday and filled two bags, only to have to watch the unedifying spectacle of 'idiot kids' throwing the bags into the Brook. Please, Crewe Town Council and Cheshire East Council, don't spend the £100k on the park without a plan to deal with some of the behaviour that we see there every day.
