We hear the word anxiety every day.
Very few people have ever had it properly explained.
What if it wasn’t random?
What if it was part of a system that is trying to predict and protect you?
In this video, I break down:
• what anxiety actually is
• what your brain is trying to do
• and the three core threats it is constantly scanning for
When you start to see it this way, something shifts.
It begins to make sense.

Overthinking often feels like something we need to stop.
We try to distract ourselves.
We try to think more positively.
We try to shut it down.
But the more you try to stop it,
the more persistent it can become.
Because overthinking isn’t random.
It’s usually your mind trying to work something out.
Trying to anticipate something.
Trying to protect you from something.
So instead of stopping it,
there can be value in letting it play out.
Following the thought through.
Seeing where it actually goes.
If you take a common example,
like thinking people are talking about you at work,
you can start to ask:
What are they saying?
Why are they saying it?
Who are they saying it to?
And then eventually:
What would that mean for me?
When you follow it all the way through,
you often arrive somewhere quite specific.
A concern about how you’re seen.
A worry about how you’re judged.
A deeper belief about yourself.
And that’s usually the point where the thinking is coming from.
Not the situation itself,
but what it represents underneath.
We don’t have control over what other people say or think.
But we can begin to understand what’s happening internally
and how that is shaping the way we respond.
And that’s where the work sits.

Supporting Samaritans With the 13 Days of Christmas
This Christmas, I’d like to raise a little money for The Samaritans - a charity I’ve personally relied on during difficult chapters of my life.
Christmas Day is one of their busiest days of the year. Their volunteers take around thousands of calls from people who need someone to talk to.
I’m not going to simply ask you to donate.
Instead, from Tuesday, I’ll be sharing 13 short videos on the most common struggles people face at this time of year; things I hear every day in my therapy room.
Finances.
Family pressure.
Grief.
Boundaries.
Relationship strain.
And that quiet feeling of “Christmas isn’t really for me.”
You can watch as many or as few as you like.
They’re all free.
And if any help you in some way, and you’re in a position to donate a couple of quid to the Samaritans, that would be wonderful, but there’s absolutely no pressure.
Follow along if you’d like to join in.
Everything starts on Tuesday.
