Chester's city walls are a landmark of the city and walking along them is a journey spanning over 2000 years of history!!
Their history began around AD 70, when the Romans built a fortress called Deva Victrix and surrounded it with earth and timber defences. These were later rebuilt in stone during the 2nd century.
After the Romans left Britain, the walls gradually fell into disrepair but were restored and strengthened during the medieval period, particularly after the Norman Conquest. Many of the towers, gates, and defensive features visible today date from the 12th to 14th centuries.
By the 18th century, the walls were no longer needed for defence and were transformed into a raised public walkway rather than being demolished. Today, they are one of Chester's most famous landmarks, offering visitors panoramic views of the city while preserving nearly 2,000 years of history.
Visit us and experience how it may have felt to walk through the walls and enter Deva Victrix!!
