I used to believe that if a previous client wanted another portrait session, they’d get in touch. Makes sense right?

Then I became a parent and I realised that uninterrupted conversations and even uninterrupted thoughts are a rarity! 😂

This chance encounter proved that having the thought to book a shoot was not enough to make them reach out to me. Life gets in the way!

By keeping in touch with our clients and showing a natural interest in what’s going on for them, we are nurturing that relationship and also staying front of mind.

When the right moment presents itself to them, it feels that bit easier to get in touch.

If it’s been a while since you checked in with a past client, today is as good a day as any ❤️

As a portrait photographer, I spend a lot of time behind the camera guiding others through the experience of having their picture taken and actually not that much time in front of one.

Last week I realised I had no recent photographs of myself to use in the new cover art for the and so - very last minute - I reached out to and asked her if she could help. Happily she could!

And honestly? Investing in these portraits was one of the most valuable things I’ve done for my business in a long time. Not just for the images - though I’m thrilled with them - but for what it reminded me about the experience of being the subject rather than a photographer.

The nerves are real! And I was reminded of the importance of clear guidance and trusting the natural evolution of a professional portrait session.

This experience has given me a fresh insight into what my personal branding clients feel on the day, including all the self-doubt and/or self-indulgence that we millennials often default to 🤦‍♀️

I hope you know that YOU are worthy of being beautifully photographed in all your power!

If you’d like someone to help you create images that reflect you and your business then you know where I am 📷

These photographs will always tell the story of how my business felt in this moment and I’m so grateful to Sara for capturing them for me ❤️

If any of this sounds familiar, I want you to hear this…

it’s not the quality of your work that’s keeping you stuck, it’s the business model you’re operating.

The digital gallery model asks your time poor clients to make important decisions alone, in their own time with no guidance. And it asks you to wait in silence with your fingers crossed, hoping they’ll value what you’ve created enough to act on it.

That’s an incredibly vulnerable position to put yourself in session after session after session.

The good news? There’s a different way and it doesn’t require you to become a different photographer - just to deliver your work differently and serve your clients fully.

Follow along if you’re curious, because this is where I show you what that looks like 🙂

There’s a myth in the photography industry that the route to higher prices is “better” pictures… a better eye, better camera, better editing, better locations etc. etc.

This leads to chronic comparisonitis and it’s such a red herring!

I’ve met incredibly talented photographers who are chronically undercharging and I’ve met photographers with modest technical skills who are running thriving, profitable businesses.

The difference isn’t their talent, it’s the experience they create for their clients.

People don’t just pay for photographs. They pay for the quality of the experience itself, from the first enquiry to the final printed product on the wall.

If you’re ready to start thinking about your family photography business differently, you’re in the right place!
