We've been looking back on the successes of our campaign in 2021/22... and we're pretty proud.
We want to take a minute to thank all of the students, university staff, and partners that have helped us achieve so much in the past year:
⭐️ In 2021/22, 17 STAR groups campaigned for Equal Access for refugees and people seeking asylum at their universities - and 4 won! They secured new scholarships and improved conditions for refugees and asylum-seeking students.
⭐️ STAR's national team provided expert support to 11 new scholarships. 84 universities now offer Sanctuary Scholarships for refugee and asylum-seeking students.
⭐️ Our national mentoring project got bigger and better. 100 applicants from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds received support with their university and scholarship applications from STAR volunteers.
⭐️ We welcomed 6 new Equal Access Activists to our team of fantastic campaigners with lived experience of accessing university while seeking asylum or with an insecure immigration status. The online peer support network that they coordinate grew to over 200 members.
⭐️ We organised events and workshops about access to university for over 900 people, including 382 university staff and 412 refugee applicants.
⭐️ We achieved a lot more thanks to brilliant partnerships with charities and HE sector organisations that share our goals. Special thanks to all members of the Access to Higher Education Working Group for their support. 👏
We know there's a long way to go before refugees and people seeking asylum have to higher education in the UK. We'll keep breaking down barriers in the year ahead.
