The SOON Project

Hello all, final takeover today. Thank you so much to the SOON project for hosting us these past few days. I thought I would use today to talk about our current collection called ‘Homebody’.

Homebody - A collection of clothes to wear even when your at home. As we spend more time creating spaces of comfort, warmth and hopefully safety we need our wardrobe to reflect that. For me getting dressed has always been an integral part to my identity even if the only person who would experience it was me. This past year I continued to get dressed for myself and it has always been one of the greatest joys in this difficult time.

‘Homebody’ was made with ideas of glamour and comfort combined into one, using natural fibres each set breathes with you and allows for you to do whatever you need in your home. These are clothes for sitting to watch a film, for dancing on your bed, curled up reading a book and hopefully one day to be worn during warm days on the beach or evenings with friends.

Do You know these moments of feeling yourself alive? Suddenly connected to your pain, to your joy, or to them both at the same time? It is this longing, this vivid trembling inside. Something is happening to you, which you might not name or even understand, but you feel it, deeply, with all your being. These are the moments of the essence showing itself.
This is what my work is about. A search for the essence behind the form.

In late 2018 I connected with another couple through another Dementia support group. Bob cares for his wife Valerie, who has advanced vascular dementia and is also blind due to an earlier accident, at home. Once again, the love, strength and resilience Bob shows is incredible.

“One day in the early stages, after some aberration or other, she paused and looked at me sadly and said "I'm just a silly old woman, aren't I?" Quite a heartbreaking moment because by then I knew what was going on.”

The final image is from a disposable I gave Bob to photograph their life together.

As well as spending time with couples whose lives have been turned upside down by the disease, I also spent some time in a care home. I met relatives on visits and saw how hard this is, in very different ways to what I see with Malcolm and Alma.
