panic attacks can feel terrifying.

when you're in the middle of one, it can genuinely feel like something is seriously wrong. your heart races, your chest feels tight, your hands shake, you feel dizzy or sick, and sometimes it can feel like you're losing control.

but what's actually happening is that your body thinks it's protecting you.

your brain has spotted what it believes to be a threat and has switched on your survival response. hundreds of years ago, that response helped us escape danger. today, it can be triggered by stress, anxiety, overwhelm or situations that feel unsafe, even when we're not in any real physical danger.

your body doesn't know the difference.

it floods you with adrenaline and gets you ready to run, fight or escape.

the problem is that there is often nowhere for that energy to go.

your body has prepared for action, but no action happens.

that's why, once the worst of the panic has passed, movement can sometimes help. going for a walk, having a run, dancing around the kitchen, shaking out your arms or doing something physical can help your nervous system complete the process it was preparing for.

most importantly, if you've ever experienced a panic attack, just remember your body is trying to protect you. it’s just set the alarm system off at the wrong time.

we all have a relationship with alcohol, but not all relationships look the same.

is it part of celebrating?
a way to relax?
a social habit?
a coping mechanism?
something you rarely think about?
something you avoid altogether?

this alcohol awareness week, we’re asking a more honest question:

what role does alcohol really play in your life?

sometimes it’s not about quitting but taking the time to understand yourself a little better.
