Don't just get attention. Build a reputation.

In the rush to "go viral" or secure a flashy headline, many brands confuse attention with reputation. But here is the hard truth of modern Public Relations:

Getting people to look at you is easy. Getting them to believe you is the real work.

Great PR isn't about spinning a story or sweeping mistakes under the rug. It’s about building a bridge of credibility between an organization and the public. When the foundation is weak, no amount of media coverage will save it.

If you want your PR strategy to actually drive business value, focus on three things:

• Consistency over Hype: A steady stream of authentic, value-driven stories beats a one-time stunt every single time.

• Active Listening: Don't just blast out press releases. Pay attention to what your community, media contacts, and detractors are actually saying.

• Radical Transparency: When things go wrong, own it fast. Acknowledging a mistake builds far more trust than a overly polished corporate statement.

Reputation is an long-term investment, not a short-term campaign. 📈

The real "Friday Feeling" in PR... 😂

We all know the rules of the PR universe. You’ve survived the weekly status calls, tracked down that elusive client approval, and your coverage report is finally looking beautiful.

You’re about to close your laptop at 4:30 PM. You're feeling victorious.
..And then, the universe tests you.

Scenario A: A client sends a "quick question" that requires a full crisis comms strategy.

Scenario B: A journalist replies to a pitch you forgot you sent three weeks ago, demanding an interview in 10 minutes.

Scenario C: A major breaking news event drops, instantly hijacking your carefully planned afternoon campaign launch.

Shoutout to all my fellow PR and comms pros grinding through the final stretch of the week! May your pitches be answered, your embargoes respected, and your weekend completely notification-free.

It’s a Time of Bitter Pills in the Media This Week

This week’s sugar-coated media columns will be less sugar ‘Kane’ and more chocoholic as journalists move their attention from last night’s ‘Mexican Wave’ to tomorrow’s World Chocolate Day.

The best quality, the tastiest, the biggest bar and the brand that lasts longest in the new heat wave. Anything to reduce the tension of World Cup induced anxiety including emergency legislation to extend pub opening hours to 5am on account of the late kick off.

The Starmer leaving present will have a couple of bitter pills in it too as the new boy is forced to conjure up a magical way of filling the multi billion pound defence black hole he’s about to inherit… which even a second office at No.10 in the North won't help him navigate.

The economists will be running the numbers, and we’ll see sector journalists from the health, education and environmental sectors analyse where the axe will fall, whilst the techies will be covering the designs for the new AI drones that won’t even need to be programmed but will know themselves where to go and explode.

On a more serious note, the 7/7 terrorist attacks on the London transport system will be remembered on Tuesday, its 21st anniversary, with writers reflecting on whether the country's cities are any safer today than they were then.

But we’ll all have Sunday’s Wimbledon final to look forward to so get in the strawberries and cream. Coincidentally it’s the 81st birthday of Virginia Wade, the only British woman in history to win titles at all four major Grand Slams including Wimbledon in 1977.

Little known though is that ‘dance’ is the most popular recreational sport after football for young people. The Dance World Cup starts on Wednesday in Dublin….so there’s still hope yet!
