We are now using the rich flora and fauna data from Flat Holm to create a wonderful programme map that we hope to light up in Techniquest.

The attractive map will grab the attention of people whilst also being educational and interesting!

It's been a while, but DAPTEC is back! As we look ahead to entering prototyping and testing, it's all about getting into the nitty-gritty and deciding exactly how the data physicalisation will look to the public. It's also time to do some work on the back end, working out the technology that will be needed to run everything and how it will be programmed.

The sustainability house has had a slight redesign, adding a wind turbine and a battery that supplies the house with electricity that it draws from both the turbine and the solar panel. There is also talk of removing the pressure pads spoken of previously and replacing them with buttons. This would make the artefact more accessible to people in wheelchairs but would still get the interactive element across!

Stay tuned for the upcoming prototypes and tests!

It appears that another breakthrough has been reached due to the chats that the team have had over the past week or so! You'll remember that our problem regarding our sustainability story was the worry that linking the Flat Holm weather data (represented by the turning toblerones) and the interactive pressure pads that provide sun/rain/wind to the house/tap/turbine on the artefact would perhaps cause some confusion.

The solution involves a slightly new design for the sustainability panel of the artefact, now containing three sets of ten toblerones (still representing sun/rain/wind) and a sort of dollhouse design in which the visitor can see into the house and are able to see things like the TV, shower and tap inside.

The default state will come from the Flat Holm weather data. However, if there are low readings then the visitors may become encouraged to get involved and jump on the pressure pads to provide the sun/rain/wind that the house needs. Once the visitor walks away, this will then reset back to the default state.

The team can't wait to test this out!
