There’s always an opportunity to learn and grow

I've been asked to do work for free. I did it it once and would not do it again. Although they were happy with the quality of my work, there has been no offer of paid work and I feel like a mug.

If you can't value what you do, why should they? I had diminished myself, which did nothing for my feelings of self-worth.

Skills-sharing is, I feel, a different matter and I have an agreement with a designer where we will do work for each other. Neither of us takes advantage and it's a set-up which benefits both of us.
