At IdEAL, we’re out in the paddocks every day, scoop in hand, clearing what our horses so generously leave behind. It’s not glamorous, but it’s vital.

Daily poo‑picking keeps pastures healthy, reduces worm burden, and prevents “horse‑sick” fields, breaking the parasite lifecycle and keeping grass safe and nutritious. It’s a small, consistent act that protects wellbeing in the long run.

But here’s the thing: the same principle applies to us.

Life builds up its own detritus, unfinished tasks, negative thoughts, emotional clutter. When we procrastinate, those piles grow. Research from the University of Sheffield shows that procrastination increases stress and reduces wellbeing, while consistent small actions boost confidence and resilience. As Peter Walsh put it: “Clutter is not just physical, it’s emotional, mental, and spiritual.”

So, just as we clear the paddocks daily, we need to clear our minds. Using NLP techniques like reframing, anchoring calm states, and chunking tasks into manageable steps helps us deal with life’s mess before it overwhelms us. Combine that with Equine‑Assisted Learning, and the lesson becomes tangible. Horses live in the present, they don’t dwell on yesterday’s manure or tomorrow’s workload. They respond to what’s here, now. Working with them teaches us to do the same: to notice, act, and move forward with clarity.

If you’d like to learn how to clear the clutter, in your paddock or your mind, join one of IdEAL’s EAL and NLP wellbeing sessions. Small daily actions make lasting change.

Myth‑Busting EAL!

Let’s tackle one of the most persistent misconceptions about Equine‑Assisted Learning, that it’s just a ‘nice day out with horses’. It’s a lovely idea, sunshine, fresh air, a gentle horse or two but it’s also completely wrong.

Because the truth is that develops core professional skills. Horses are masters of reading intention, clarity, emotional regulation and teamwork. They respond not to job titles or confidence theatre, but to the real communication you bring into the space. That makes them exceptional partners for developing the soft skills employers value most: presence, collaboration, resilience, and the ability to lead without force.

During a recent team‑building session, a group was asked to guide a horse through a simple obstacle. No ropes, no pushing, no coaxing, just communication and teamwork.

At first, the horse stood still. The team talked over each other, gave mixed signals, and tried to “manage” the situation into submission. The horse’s response? A polite but immovable “no.”

After a reset, they slowed down, clarified roles, aligned their intentions, and communicated consistently. Within seconds, the horse walked calmly through the obstacle, not because he had to, but because the team finally worked with each other instead of against each other. That moment taught them more about leadership and collaboration than any PowerPoint ever could.

If your organisation wants to build communication, confidence and teamwork in an innovative way that works, our EAL professional development sessions are a powerful place to start.
