With the UK experiencing some lovely sunny weather for May half term here are our top tips for keeping your cats cool:
• Hydration Is Important: make sure your cat has access to drinking water at all times. Consider putting extra water bowls in different places. Remember to put water bowls away from food bowls and to use glass, metal or ceramic and to avoid using plastic. Also use bowls with a large surface area so your cat does not have to put their head in the bowl.
• Provide Shade: make sure there are plenty of shaded areas for your cat to go both outside and inside like garden plants and cat hides.
• Keeping Cool: Ensure there are fans in areas that your cat frequents to keep the air circulating. Try freezing a bottle of water, wrapping it in a towel and place it in an area your cat frequents. Make sure the bottle will not leak and the cat can get away from it if they want. Keeping your curtains closed will help keep the room cooler.
• Look for signs that your cat is over heating: key signs include loss of energy and lethargy, excessive panting and dribbling. If you recognise these signs move your cat to a cool area and encourage your cat to have a drink. If symptoms persist or get worse (vomiting or collapse) seek veterinary advice immediately.

Today 24th January is National change a pets life day.
We certainly did that summer last year. One July morning this little girl walked onto the patio of our french home. She quickly made herself at home and found a place in our hearts. We found out the person looking after her had died and quickly decided that she had clearly chosen us as the replacements. In September she officially became ours, registered, microchipped, vaccinated and passport issued and she came back to the UK with us to her new forever home. She is the sweetest of girls and we adore her.
Settling a new cat comes with lots of challenges. You can follow Frankies story as we share useful tips and advice about all things cat in our new blog coming later this year.

Happy national black cat day!
Black cats used to be considered unlucky and were often overlooked in rescues, which is why national black cat day was started back in 2011 by Cats Protection. Whilst we love all cat's here at Paws At Home, black cats are a frim favourite of one of our directors Hilary, this is Dexter one of the three cats that live with Hilary and Don.
