When I worked as a business advisor coaching low-income and unemployed individuals, these were the phrases I heard the most. It wasn't a lack of talent or drive holding people back—it was a deep-rooted belief that entrepreneurship was a luxury reserved for a privileged few.

The newly released Maple Review Report proves exactly what I saw on the ground: economic deprivation remains the single biggest barrier to starting a business in the UK, and social mobility is at a 50-year low. We are systematically shutting out brilliant working-class talent.

To fix this, we need to completely rethink how we support potential founders:

Start in Schools: We need entrepreneurial training in secondary schools to show children from poorer families that they can be future business leaders. Let's raise their aspirations before the world tells them to lower them.

Move Past 'One-Off' Advice: A single 45-minute meeting isn't enough. We need a joined-up national infrastructure that links government support with existing platforms like Digital Boost and Enterprise Nation to provide ongoing, on-need mentoring.

Entrepreneurship shouldn't be a privilege for the secure; it should be an open path for everyone. Let’s stop telling people to stay in their lanes and start building a highway for them to succeed. 🚙💨
