A monumental study by Antonio Canova (1757-1822).

One of the greatest sculptors of European Neoclassicism, Canova used drawing as a fundamental tool to refine proportion, movement, and ideal form.

This large-scale study of a male n**e, executed in pen, ink and pencil, reveals a striking balance between restraint and power. The figure, standing in a subtle contrapposto, is rendered with remarkable economy — every line serving the clarity of form.

Comparable in scale and technique to drawings preserved in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this sheet belongs to a rare and highly refined group of academic studies.

A work that combines strong visual presence with art historical significance.

This new Private Viewing brings together a carefully selected group of drawings spanning from around 1500 to the present day, reflecting the range of our interests, research, and recent discoveries.

Among the highlights are a rare and previously unpublished oil on paper by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, an important preparatory study by Federico Zuccaro for the Vatican, and a particularly significant and previously unrecorded drawing after Michelangelo, possibly by Aristotile da Sangallo, offering rare insight into an early and largely unrealised phase of the Medici Chapel project.

The exhibition also includes an important large-scale drawing by Antonio Canova, a remarkable sheet by Giacomo Cavedone, and a rare red chalk drawing by Andrea Boscoli.

Each work has been chosen for its quality, rarity, and art historical interest. We hope you will enjoy discovering this selection as much as we enjoyed bringing it together.

A Glimpse into the Creative Engine of the Carracci

Just back from the Musée du Louvre, where the exhibition Drawings of the Carracci, The Making of the Farnese Gallery offers an exceptional look at the very genesis of one of the most ambitious decorative cycles in Western art.

More than a show, it’s a deep dive into the minds of Annibale and Agostino Carracci and their circle, through the most remarkable gathering of preparatory drawings ever assembled for the Farnese Gallery. From swift sketches to grand compositional studies, every sheet reveals experimentation, courage, and the forging of a visual language that still resonates today.

What strikes you most is the vitality of the line, how each gesture, each draft, builds toward a total work of art that changed the course of Baroque painting across Europe.

A heartfelt congratulations to Victor Hundsbuckler, Curator in the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre, for an exhibition that is both deeply learned and profoundly moving, a true celebration of artistic process and invention.
