My first encounter with Cézanne’s work was when I was probably 14, at a chor bazaar or flea market through someone’s old diary I got for a penny in my city in India. Its pages were filled with numbered artworks.
I also remember being strongly gravitated to the classical academic style of painting during this time, but this diary filled with his collection of postcards and pages definitely felt like an opening to something else. With hand written notes.
Very many years later, I find myself yday standing in front of this original artwork Baigneurs, made in 1865, which was one of my favorites from his lot - the other from the book - still there, under the glass of a side table in India, sitting for more than a decade in my studio.
And this painting I made today, inspired by him and the visit, almost feels like a homageor my way of closing the circle. I’d like to think in this case this artist found a way to me before I found a way to him.
Also the scale in the first image only represents my paintings ambition it being 3x3inches which can be seen in images followed
