My tribute to folding screens, featuring some recent saves and a few iconic pieces.
Folding screens originated in China during the Han Dynasty as practical room dividers, often made of paper or silk. They spread to Japan, Korea, and later Europe, where they evolved into decorative pieces of art. By the 17th century, European designs incorporated panels of wood, leather, and fabric, influenced by Asian aesthetics. Initially functional, folding screens became prized as symbols of wealth and artistic expression, particularly in the 18th and 19th century. Today, they continue to be used both as decorative objects and space dividers.
