Artiste plasticien né à Thies, Sénégal, Baye Gaye vit et travaille aujourd'hui sur la Côte d'azur. Profondément marqué par son héritage africain et la culture du tissage propre à sa ville natale célèbre pour sa manufacture de tapisserie, Baye Gaye propose un art protéiforme et éminemment personnel — carrefour des civilisations, non exempt d'un esprit militant.

L'art de Baye Gaye prend son envol lorsqu’il fait émerger son héritage culturel africain par les moyens qu’offre l’art du XXIè siècle, dans ce qu’il a de plus cosmopolite. Les peines et les joies intrinsèquement liées à l'Histoire de son continent en constitue le ressort sensoriel. Son appel n'en est alors plus qu’universel.

Baye Gaye

He was born in 1975 in Thies, Senegal, 70 km away from the capital city. Thies is an important arts and crafts centre, where the Senegalese manufacture of decorative arts is located.
Ever since he was a child, he was passionate about drawing. « I would draw on the sand, on the walls of the houses in the neighborhood, on the desks in class, I would make toys for me and my mates out of clay and metal. » This was a way for the young artist to channel the bountiful energy of a happy childhood.
Throughout this autodidactic period, he started to master the handcraft techniques which would lay the foundations of his future works. Free from all establishment constraints, the post-colonialism heritage and the illusions of a globalised contemporary art, Baye found his own way. Baye drew his inspiration from his mental reservoir which is the African subconscious, passed on from generation to generation from the beginning of mankind.
