Happy New Year!

‘Thank God It’s Christmas’, a song by Queen, sums up how we all feel at the end of this year.
Now is the time to take a deep breath, reflect on the past year and gather our energies for the year ahead.
Since we moved to Paris, Nicola has given me a special gift every birthday and Christmas: a new piece of her art.
Ten years ago, Christmas felt bittersweet, as we all knew it would most likely be Nicola’s last.
She was battling cancer for eight months already, never losing faith and trying to gain the upper hand.
On Thursday 24 December, my father, Solveig, and Judith worked hard to keep me out of the apartment.
We wanted to prepare a very special Christmas, seasoned with German, American and French influences, and I was quite annoyed to be sidelined.
Nicola knew it was one of her last opportunities to convey an artistic message and wanted to create the perfect surprise.
At around 9:00 she began painting her final piece in one go, only taking breaks to recharge her fairly empty batteries. It was finished by 3 pm that afternoon and wrapped up in paper.
I wasn’t expecting anything from Nicola, so I was even more excited to receive her very special gift as the last parcel of the day.
When I removed the paper, I saw a bird, a plant, and radiant light. There was no darkness, just hope and love. Wonderful violets, roses, reds, blues and greens filled the painting.
There was no sign of cancer; it had gone. 
She named it ‚Birdman‘ and called it her masterpiece.
We think the story behind this year’s holiday card, L’Amour, could be a good inspiration for next year!
