Batak architecture from lake Toba ✨

When you explore Samosir island in Lake Toba, one thing immediately catches your attention: the Batak architecture of the houses!

Most notable is the large steeply pitched saddle back roof which gives the house it’s distinctive look.
The living area is small and dark, light only enters through 4 small windows. Hence why the people spend most of their time outdoors and use the house largely for sleeping.

There are multiple places where you can visit them up close but we recommend this one: pengrajin ulos. It is generally less touristic than the others which makes it more comfortable to walk around.
