We are in Lovoni Village this week conducting the integrated training on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) for the communities from the Bureta and Lovoni Districts.

Participants will also take part in the Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) training sessions, facilitated by the Ministry of Forestry - Fiji, the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji, and the Lomaiviti Provincial Council.

Through these trainings, participants are gaining practical knowledge and skills to support environmental sustainability, protect biodiversity, strengthen livelihoods, and promote sustainable land-use practices for future generations.

WCS today convened the CAPA Project Wrap-Up and Handover Session with representatives from CAPA communities across the districts of Namalata, Dawasamu, Nakorotubu, Bureta, Kubulau, and Bua.

The session provided an opportunity to reflect on the project’s achievements, acknowledge the contributions of partners and government stakeholders, and confirm post-project roles and responsibilities to ensure the continuity of sustainable marine and terrestrial resource management initiatives.

It also marked the official handover of the WCS CAPA Project, reinforcing stakeholder ownership, promoting the sustainability of project outcomes, and strengthening ongoing collaboration in conservation and watershed management efforts.

Discussions also focused on strengthening connections between communities and relevant government stakeholders to support, sustain, and build upon the activities and initiatives implemented under the CAPA Project.

In addition, a Watershed Fund Dialogue was held with community representatives to discuss how the fund can best support local communities moving forward. We also facilitated the socialization of the Fisheries Management Rules with government partners, including the review of Fisheries Management Rules for the districts of Bureta, Bua, and Nakorotubu to support future fishing and licensing integration.

We acknowledge and thank all stakeholders who participated in today’s session, including representatives from the Ministry of Forestry - Fiji Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji, Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Fiji, Ministry of itaukei Affairs, and the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.

The Climate Adaptation and Protected Areas (CAPA) Initiative is funded by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada in partnership with International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).
