A sight we unfortunately see all too often, especially on roadside pruning, is really bad pruning. It is not just unsightly but also bad as trees respond to lopping by quickly growing many small, thin shoots, known as “epicormic branches.” These new branches are weakly attached to the limb and are far more likely to break off in wind or storms, creating a safety hazard. The short term fix leads to long term problems. Trees pruned properly look better, do not put on excessive reactive growth and are just safer.
