An Unforgettable journey for the Girmitiyas Brought to Fiji

It is both a privilege and an honor to remember the Girmitiyas our ancestors who journeyed across the seas from India to the shores of Fiji. Their arrival was not by choice, but by circumstance, and yet they carried with them an unbreakable spirit, deep rooted values, and the will to survive.

In 1879, the first ship, Leonidas, brought the first group of indentured laborers to Fiji under the British colonial system known as the Girmit. These brave souls endured unimaginable hardships separation from families, unfamiliar lands, grueling work, and cultural displacement. They worked in sugarcane plantations under difficult conditions, often exploited, yet they did not let their pain define them.

Despite the harsh treatment, the Girmitiyas held onto their traditions, language, and religion. They formed communities, built temples, sang songs of longing and hope, and laid the foundation of the Indo Fijian identity. Their strength became the soil in which future generations grew.

Today, we walk freely because they toiled in chains. We speak boldly because they were silenced. We celebrate because they endured. Their story is one of resilience, sacrifice, and triumph.

Let us never forget their legacy. Let every prayer, every celebration, and every step forward carry the echo of their courage.

We honor you, Girmitiyas. Your journey was not in vain.

The Honourable Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka
And the Honourable Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu

I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Coalition Government for the generous assistance provided in the form of a rice harvester, which was officially handed over on 27th March 2025 at my residence in Naleba, Labasa.

This support from the government will significantly reduce the workload and labour demands in rice farming, allowing for more efficient and timely operations in the Bucaisau and Wainikoro sectors.

Thanks to this assistance, farmers in our area have been motivated to expand their rice farming activities, contributing positively to the growth of the agricultural sector. As of now, we have employed two labourers for the harvesting process, directly benefiting two local families.

We look forward to further advancing agricultural development in our region, with hopes of achieving even greater progress in the near future.

Vinaka vakalevu.
