A clear message emerged from the discussion. โAccreditation requires more than good intentions. It demands a strong, hospital-wide quality management system that is supported by continuous improvement initiatives and strengthened through external quality assurance mechanisms.โ
In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Markos Feleke, President of the Ethiopian Healthcare Federation, emphasized close collaboration between EHF and the Ministry of Health, particularly the Health System Innovation & Quality Lead Executive Office. He noted that SafeCare implementation significantly contributes to the national accreditation process and highlighted Ethiopiaโs potential to become a medical tourism hub in East Africa.
Dr. Abas Hassen, Lead Executive Officer for Health System Innovation and Quality at the Ministry of Health, elaborated on the Ministryโs strategic direction, stressing that the journey toward quality improvement has already begun. He underlined that early adopters gain greater advantage than late implementers and stressed that the government canโt support every facility individually. Therefore, facilities must take ownership of their quality journey by investing in structured systems and participating in recognized external quality assurance and certification programs.
Participants explored Ethiopiaโs ongoing national efforts, including the Healthcare Quality Strategy and the National Healthcare Accreditation Program, which is already guiding selected facilities toward accreditation readiness and defining clear expectations for health facilities.
A key highlight was the presentation of the SafeCare Program as a practical, structured solution that helps hospitals to assess quality and safety performance, Identify and close critical gaps, and build continuous accreditation readiness systems.
Hospitals shared real implementation experiences, demonstrating how SafeCare is already helping facilities integrate quality and patient safety across departments and strengthen leadership engagement in quality improvement.
The event concluded with a recognition ceremony honouring six private hospitals as Early Adopter Facilities under the SafeCare Quality Programme, in recognition of their commitment to advancing healthcare quality, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement, serving as a model for accreditation readiness.
