What I value most about being Naath—Nuer—is the tradition of speaking truth openly. A person can stand by their words, defend them with conviction, and still walk away with dignity and respect. Truth is not betrayal; it is a responsibility. Even when people disagree, the right to speak remains.

When I look at what happens in Jiang, I feel pain. Too often, speaking honestly can lead to judgment, isolation, or even persecution. Silence becomes a form of survival. People weigh their safety against their conscience, and many choose quiet not because they have nothing to say, but because the cost of saying it is too high.

This is why fear can become a powerful tool. When leaders silence critics, others learn to hold their tongues. Over time, truth disappears, and with it, trust.

As a Naath person, I was raised to believe that a human being should be able to stand in the light of their words. To defend what they believe with everything they have. That, to me, is dignity.
