Metropol Parasol
One of the largest timber structures in the world, designed by Jürgen Mayer and Arup, seems to emerge from the ground of La Encarnación square in Seville, Spain to reactivate this long abandoned urban void caused by the demolition of a market.
The mushroom-like canopy stretches 70 by 150 meters and is raised up to approximately 26 meters, making it a walkway to observe the city from a height just slightly taller than its surrounding. Under the canopy are a new marketplace, a restaurant, a square for performances, and a basement to view the Roman and Andalusian archaeological remains. In order to avoid damaging these remains, the whole canopy rests on just six supports.
