At Club Dragón, it's not all about the latest releases. Every now and then, we look back to the past, open up the treasure chest of relics, and bring out some true wargaming classics.
Last Saturday, December 13, five club veterans embarked on a risky mission: to bring out Avalon Hill's legendary Thunder at Cassino, a gem from the 1980s that had been waiting decades for its moment.
The doubt was inevitable:
Would it stand the test of time?
Would it still be as enjoyable as we remembered it 40 years ago... or would it end up being a failed nostalgia trip?
The answer was a resounding success 💥. The game ran like clockwork, and we all agreed on one thing: the game could be reissued today practically as is. Perhaps some modern graphic tweaks would be welcome, although those tokens with their unmistakable ASL flavor still have a special charm that has not been lost over the years.
Old cardboard, great battles, and the confirmation that some wargames... are timeless.

Game Report – Mega Civilization in CLUB DRAGON MADRID

On November 15th, thirteen players gathered at Madrid’s Club Dragón for our 7th Mega Civilization showdown. From Iberian in the west to Persia in the east, the board was set and the game began.

Early turns were calm—except for the Minoans, besieged on all sides yet managing to rise back later on the game by launching a Naval Military fleet.

In the east, peace held. In the west, war erupted. Carthage and Rome triggered full-scale Punic Wars, ending with Carthage devastated yet finishing 3rd, and Rome securing 2nd place.

Calamities ravaged the map: four Babylonian slave uprisings, Egypt buying 5 calamities to dodge Civil War (and succeeding), the Parthians crushed by a brutal Civil War + Barbarian combo, and the Hittites losing a staggering 46 population in a final-turn Civil War.

When the dust settled, Persia claimed victory, powered by sharp diplomacy and flawless advancement through the Archaeological Succession table.
