The Singaporean registered MV Express Pearl had been burning for nearly 2 weeks off the coast of Sri Lanka before the fire was finally extinguished.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, it’s sinking and still caring hundreds of tons of chemicals of major concern is the possibility of an oil spill. There are two possibilities either all the fuel has caught fire or the oil is still inside the ship. “We’ve already taken precautions in case there is a leak" officials say, as local residents are bracing for the worst. It could cost fishermen their jobs and livelihoods. Coastal cities near the ship have seen oil and debris pollution for days if it sinks further experts say it could destroy the bottom of the sea in the area.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The ship was traveling from India to Singapore when it caught fire off of Sri Lanka‘s western coast, experts believe it was caused by a nitric acid leak.
It carried over 1400 containers of chemicals and plastics, 81 of which held dangerous goods. The plastic debris forced a fishing ban along an 80 km stretch of Sri Lanka’s coastline affecting thousands who rely on the fishing industry. “This is a blow to our lives we can’t go to the sea which means we can’t make a living” fishermen says.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Salvage expert attempted to tow the ship into deeper water to minimize environmental and marine life damage but the operation was abandoned after the back section hit the seabed. Both Sri Lankan and Singaporean officials are investigating the incident.
