As pressure and temperature fall, oxygen and residual moisture can create the conditions for 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 in drums, evaporators, economizers and steam circuits.

The impact often appears later, during restart: longer preparation time, additional flushing, contamination of the water steam cycle, damage to protective magnetite layers or higher tube reliability risk.

That is why 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 should be defined before the shutdown, not once the equipment has already cooled down.

For short outages, wet preservation may be enough if water chemistry is properly controlled. For medium outages, nitrogen blanketing can help reduce oxygen ingress. For extended shutdowns, dry preservation is usually the most robust option, although it requires more preparation and a clear restart plan.

The key decision is to match the preservation method to the expected outage duration and the operational requirements of the next startup.

A boiler is protected when its internal environment is controlled.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝟓𝟎 𝐌𝐖 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝟕 𝐆𝐖𝐡 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭

In a thermosolar plant, heat represents a significant opportunity energy recovery

This was the challenge AITESA addressed in a 50 MW thermosolar plant in China. The plant had significant thermal flows available, and the objective was to make better use of them to improve overall energy efficiency within the existing power cycle.

AITESA implemented a heat recovery boiler with an integrated heat exchange train designed to improve energy recovery across four key points of the cycle:
• 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫: Preheated the high pressure feed water (over 100 bar) with the remaining HTF energy before steam generation.
• 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Converted the recovered heat into high-pressure steam for the main power cycle.
• 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Increased the steam energy level before turbine inlet.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Reheated the steam after the first turbine expansion at lower pressure (over 20 bar) to support a second expansion stage.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭: an increase in overall efficiency from 35.5% to 37.5%.

For a 50 MW asset, that improvement represented 7 GWh per year of additional recovered energy that would otherwise remain unused. In thermosolar plants, this type of opportunity often starts by reviewing how the boiler and heat exchange train use the available heat across the steam cycle.
