🌡️ How Do Cities Prepare for Heat They Haven’t Experienced Before?

"This is an unprecedented event, with about a one-in-1,000 chance of occurring in a given year."
That is how climatologist Christophe Cassou described the extreme heat that affected parts of France in May 2026.

In parts of Western Europe, temperatures rose 10-15 °C above seasonal norms, while the UK recorded its hottest May day on record at 34.8 °C.

But before cities can respond to extreme heat, they first need to understand it.
→ Where are temperatures highest?
→ Which neighbourhoods are most exposed?
→ Where is green infrastructure lacking?
→ Which populations are most vulnerable?

Answering these questions requires environmental data collected from multiple sources, including sensors, drones, and Earth observation programmes such as Copernicus.
This information can then be analysed through geospatial tools to create maps, identify patterns, and support urban planning decisions.

At Inhabitat MSc, students explore these processes through the Remote Sensing and Geodata Management module (https://tinyurl.com/INHABITATCourse). Working with environmental datasets from satellites, drones, and ground-based measurements, students learn how data can be collected, processed, visualised, and ultimately used to address real-world urban and environmental challenges.

As climate pressures continue to affect European cities, understanding how to turn environmental data into actionable information is becoming increasingly important.

Day 1 in Porto: Designing Tools that Build Hope and Career Confidence! 🇵🇹

Last week, the Diamond Empower consortium kicked off Day 1 of our meeting at the Porto Innovation Hub, hosted by Proportional Message. We talked about how we can better support educators, coaches, and local communities in helping individuals build a bright professional future.

Day 1 was filled with exciting updates designed to provide practical support for grassroots organisations:

• Empowerment & Transformative Capabilities: Partners from the University of Vienna and Aarhus University shared exciting first results on what truly builds individual confidence and adaptive strength in today's workforce.
• Empowering Learners: We reviewed new data on how to spark true motivation and recognise hidden talents that standard CVs often miss.
• A New Digital Assistant: Partners at CETIC presented our project's platform prototype and AI recommender model, a digital toolkit that helps learners find perfect paths for their learning journeys.
• Living Lab Previews: Organisations like Universidad de Burgos - UBU and EMiT Feltrinelli - ETS led collaborative workshops to prepare for our upcoming Living Labs, ensuring our tools are easy, supportive, and community-centred.

We want to make the journey into employment welcoming, personalised, and full of dignity. Stay tuned as we move into testing these exciting new tools in real learning contexts near you!
