Thanks to the cataloging work of Michaela Richter and Julian Vargo, on this first day of the Breath of Life Archival Institute organized by the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival, we accession a new collection, the Abraham Halpern Papers on Indigenous Languages: http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.7297/X2NK3DGP. This new collection results from recataloging the former Abraham M. Halpern Papers on Pomoan languages into several series (see the scope and content field at the link above), and adding to the new collection original notebooks, other loose notes, manuscripts, and file slips related to Kwtsaan, a Yuman language of the Southwest, as well as professional correspondence and some photographs. The former collection has been deaccessioned, but the catalog history fields of the items in the new collection track former identifiers for those who have consulted this material previously.

Yesterday more than 35 notebooks from the estate of Abraham Halpern (1914-1985) related to his early collaborations with Kwtsaan people of the Southwest reached the CLA. Here is the first one, the beginning dated October 30, 1940. Stay tuned as we process this collection!

Hoy publicamos una nueva colección, 'Materiales del proyecto de documentación "tātā xi na" de la lengua dà’àn dávì', o mixteco, una lengua indígena del sur de Puebla, México, basada en una colaboración entre la doctoranda en lingüística de Berkeley, Tzintia Montaño Ramírez, y Onésimo Cruz Mejía y muchos otros, algunos de los cuales se muestran aquí: http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.7297/X2PZ587R. Ayer publicamos la Colección de materiales de la lengua yanesha' de Mariana Poblete: http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.7297/X22F7MVZ. Las grabaciones de audio y video, las transcripciones y las fotografías fueron creadas en 2024 y 2025, junto con numerosos colaboradores de la comunidad yanesha' en Perú. En la imagen, correspondiente al registro 2025-29.035, aparecen Valbina Miguel, Matilde Huancho y la lingüista Mariana Poblete. Recently we have worked with linguist Trevor Allin to preserve materials related to his documentation of Resígaro, an Arawakan language of Peru, in 1971 and 1972. In addition to paper materials, today six tapes of sound recordings arrived from England. The tapes include more than 20 stories in the language, as well as songs and word lists, all by three siblings of the Andrade Ocagane family and their mother. We will be able to return digital copies of these recordings next month when Berkeley linguists Zachary O'Hagan and Lev Michael work with one of these four speakers.
