Hello everyone!

For today’s mini lesson, let’s talk about modal verbs for ability.

We use ‘can’ and ‘can’t’ to talk about a skill that we have or something that we know how to do.

This is very common with verbs like ‘speak’ or ‘play’ when we’re talking about languages, instruments, games and sports.
She can speak Italian.
He can play the piano.
She can’t read yet.

We also use ‘can’ to mean something like ‘it’s possible’.
I can come to your party. 😊 It’s possible for me to come to your party.)
John can’t go to the meeting 😊 It’s not possible for John to go to the meeting.)

We use ‘will be able to’ to talk about ability in the future.
I can’t speak French now, but I will be able to speak French next year. I’m studying really hard.
At the end of the class, you will be able to make a delicious Italian meal.

We use ‘could’ and ‘couldn’t’ to talk about ability in the past.
I could read when I was six.
I couldn’t read when I was two.
Could you sing when you were young?
He couldn’t speak Spanish until he was thirty.

Let’s review!
Change the sentences so they include: can / can’t / could / couldn’t / will be able to / won’t be able to.
1. He / speak Japanese. (now)

2. She / read / when she was four.

Hello everyone!

Today's mini lesson is about how to use 'be supposed to'. We use 'be supposed to' to talk about a rule (something you must do or must not do) or something that is expected or not expected.

However, if we choose 'be supposed to', it's usually the case that the rule isn't being followed or the thing we expected isn't happening.

· A: Are we allowed to eat here? B: We're not supposed to but everybody does.

· We're supposed to arrive at nine but we're going to be late.

· You're supposed to be sleeping! Why are you here?

Let's look at the difference.

· We must do our homework every week. (This is a real rule and maybe there's a big problem if someone doesn't do the homework.)

· We're supposed to do our homework every week. (This is much more relaxed. The teacher tells us to do our homework, but it's not a problem if we don't do it.)

Let's review! Change the sentences so that they include 'be supposed to'. (This often changes the meaning.)

1. We're not allowed to walk on the grass but I usually do.

_______________________________________________________________________

2. What time do I need to arrive?

_______________________________________________________________________

3. The plane was scheduled to leave at six but it didn't leave until half past eight.
