The Salem Express was a car and passenger ferry that operated between the ports of Safaga (in Egypt) and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). she sank shortly after midnight on December 17, 1991 .
On one such return journey from Jeddah, carrying hundreds of Egyptian pilgrims, she sank after colliding with the Hyndman Reefs ( Safaga ) ,The impact holed the bows and forced open the bow visor. The ship very quickly took on water and sank, on her starboard side within minutes. Loss of life was considerable, with the official figure being quoted as 470.
the wreck is in good condition and coral covers much of the ship. Scuba divers can peer into windows and easily enter the ship from many points.

Elphinstone Reef (also known as Sha'ab Abu Hamra) is a standalone reef in the Egyptian Red Sea situated about 30 kilometers north from the town of Marsa Alam in Egypt.
This dive site is famous for its sharks & its wonderful drift dives along deep steep walls.
If you’re lucky, you will get the chance to meet Oceanic Whitetip Shark (also called longimanus) & sometimes even Harmmerhead Sharks. The best chances to spot Sharks are from October to December.
Dolphins and Tiger Sharks can also sometimes be spotted. In addition to these giants, there are also plenty of pelagic fishes like Barracudas and Tunas. The reef life is teeming with myriads of fishes all around Elphinstone

Dragonfish is a species of marine fish. It is widespread throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea.
The little dragonfish can grow up to 10 cm length. It sheds its skin in one piece and very well camouflaged. They commonly occur in relatively shallow coastal watersas ( 3 m or less) in open sand or mud substrate in calm areas.
To feed, these fish moved their snouts very close to the food then they sucked the food item ( Fish eggs , mollusks & shrimp) into the mouth.
Unfortunately Millions of these kind of fish are sold for traditional medicine each year in China and Hong Kong alone.
