In 2016, Samsung had to deal with the public relations disaster of products (the Galaxy Note 7 phones) that suddenly caught fire. Things became worse when airlines started banning cell phones inside the cabin. In the end, the company recalled more than two million devices and stopped making the Galaxy Note 7. The recall is estimated to have cost $5.3 billion (£4.3 billion) and was extremely detrimental to the reputation of the South Korean company. Then they announced that there were battery problems.

For Samsung to face the crisis and regain its customers' trust, it made a huge effort to solve the issue; 700 experts were employed, and the company established a battery advisory council. They acknowledged the crisis, specified the problem, and provided technical as well as marketing support so they could regain their customers' trust. And by the end of 2016, the Samsung Note 7 was introduced and advertised as a top-tier, large-screen alternative to the iPhone.

Consumers ultimately agreed to trust Samsung. Why? Samsung already had a solid reputation for making popular smartphones. As well, consumers' reactions to a bad circumstance might be influenced by a positive reputation prior to a PR crisis. In addition to their well-handled crisis management, acknowledgement, and fast response.
