More Americans Are Leaving the US Than Arriving - For the First Time Since the Great Depression!

The data just confirmed what many of us have already been feeling. American citizens are choosing to leave. On purpose. For lower costs, greater safety, and a better quality of life.

I am one of them. I am currently living abroad and I want to be honest with you. It has not always been easy. But it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.

According to the Brookings Institution, the US saw a net loss of 150,000 people in 2025. And that number is expected to grow in 2026. One in five Americans now say they want to move abroad permanently. Forty percent of women between the ages of 15 and 44 say they are ready to go if given the chance.

Here is why it matters:

Political unrest can affect your travel more than you think. Protests, elections, and government instability can shut down roads, close airports, limit access to money, and change entry rules overnight. Travel advisories can go up fast. What was safe last month may look very different today.

Here are a few things to check before you travel:

Look up travel advisories for your destination at travel.state.gov (U.S. travelers) or your home country's foreign affairs website.

Check if there are upcoming elections or major political events during your travel dates. Like today, Alabama is holding its 2026 Primary Election. Locally, that may affect traffic, business hours, and community activity.

Know where your embassy or consulate is located in the country you are visiting.

Make sure your travel insurance covers trip interruption due to civil unrest.

Sign up for alerts through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at step.state.gov if you are traveling abroad.
