A Glimpse into the Evolution of Intellectual Property Law in Egypt

Egypt's journey in intellectual property (IP) protection reflects its leadership in legal modernization across the Arab world. The foundation was laid in 1949 with the introduction of Law No. 132, Egypt's first comprehensive legislation for patents and industrial designs. This landmark law positioned the country as a pioneer in safeguarding innovation and creativity.

Fast forward to 2002, the IP framework underwent a transformative update with the adoption of Law No. 82. This modern legislation consolidated and expanded protection for patents, trademarks, copyrights, and geographical indications, aligning Egypt with international standards like the TRIPS Agreement.

The evolution from the 1949 law to the 2002 legislation highlights Egypt's commitment to fostering innovation, protecting intellectual assets, and promoting economic growth.

As Egypt continues to strengthen its enforcement mechanisms and enhance its IP ecosystem, it remains a key player in the MENA region.
