A precedent-setting moment for solar in historic city centers.

For the first time, Salzburg's Old Town Preservation Commission has approved a fully integrated photovoltaic roof in the historic city center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where no photovoltaic solution had previously received approval.

The project, developed by Strobl Architekten together with Roofit.Solar, uses our iron-grey "2-in-1" solar roof modules to replace a roof that hadn't been renewed in 60 years, while fully preserving the look of a traditional standing-seam metal roof ("Falzdach").

• 330 m² of roof surface
• 28.5 kWp installed capacity
• 60 years since the last roof renewal
• First PV approval of its kind in Salzburg's protected Old Town

Because the roof was considered the building's "second most important facade," visible from viewpoints across the city, the commission required an especially high aesthetic bar. It took a long, close dialogue between the architects and the commission to get there.

As our CEO Andres Anijalg puts it: "We wanted to create new design possibilities for buildings where conventional black solar modules aren't suitable, due to regulations, aesthetics, or heritage protection. This project proves that solar energy and monument preservation can go hand in hand."

Project executed by NIMMERVOLL-2 Dach GmbH-2.

Don’t forget to register for our upcoming CPD session for architects with Paul Iddon this Tuesday, 7 July at 12:30.

Hosted by Roofit.Solar team together with Paul Iddon, this free 60-minute session covers the key differences between BIPV and traditional PV systems, how to specify solar roofs that meet UK building regs and fire safety requirements without compromising on design (with real European & UK project examples), and a live Q&A tailored to your project needs.

If you're an architect or specifier, this one's worth attending.

Form Follows Energy: A New Language for Sustainable Roof Design | Roofit.Solar 06/05/2026

🛣️ A new direction for sustainable roof design: form follows energy.

The old 'Form follows function' rule is getting an update.

💡 Solar panels bolted onto rooftops look exactly like what they are: an afterthought. They clash with lines architects spent months refining.

🔎 What if the roof itself was the solar panel?

That's what Roofit.Solar has built. Integrated solar roofing that fits the architecture, not the other way around.

As architect Paul Iddon put it: "It's not about hiding solar. It's about absorbing it into the design so it looks like it was always meant to be there."

Key takeaways from the article on the new way of design:

✅ Bolt-on solar works against the design, not with it.

✅ Integrated panels install like standard metal roofing, they just generate power too.

✅ A roof must deliver durability, function, and beauty. With integrated solar, it finally can.

📣 Big scale, zero design compromise in New York

We are thrilled to share the latest on our 91 kW commercial installation at Harlem Valley Homestead! 🧺

💡 For a working farm resort like this, the challenge was clear: generate high-capacity energy without losing the traditional character of the buildings.

🤝 Working with our US partner, ArcEdge Power, we proved that it's possible to have a power plant that still looks like a premium metal roof.

Highlights of the project:

✅ Seamless integration: No bulky racks or frames, just the clean lines of the original architecture.

⚡ Serious power: A 91 kW system built to handle heavy-duty commercial needs.

💪 Proven durability: A 2-in-1 solution that protects the infrastructure while powering it.

This project is a great example of how high-end design and sustainability can coexist on a large scale. ✔️
