Large swan feathers were once commonly used as writing quills, especially from the Middle Ages until the 19th century.
The feather shaft was cut with a small knife to form a pointed nib with a slit that could hold ink.
Writers would dip the quill into an ink bottle every few words and write by hand on paper or parchment.
Today, quill pens are still used in calligraphy, historical reenactments, and traditional lettering, where many people appreciate the slower and more decorative style of writing.
