MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE EXPRESSES CONCERN FOLLOWING BUSHFIRE IN GRAND SAVANNE, SALISBURY

Roseau, Dominica – June 5, 2026 – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy is deeply concerned by the bushfire that occurred on June 3, 2026, in Grand Savanne, Salisbury, within the West Agricultural Region, resulting in significant losses to agricultural production and damage to farm infrastructure.

Preliminary assessments indicate that approximately two and a half acres of agricultural land were affected. Among those impacted is vegetable farmer Olivia Benjamin Vidal, who suffered the loss of her entire watermelon, pumpkin, eggplant, and bell pepper crops, all cultivated under a drip irrigation system. The fire also destroyed water storage tanks with a combined capacity of 2,500 gallons, representing a substantial setback to her farming operation.

Following reports of the incident, the Ministry, through the Extension Division, including the Director of Agriculture and the West Region Extension Team, conducted an initial assessment of
the affected area to determine the extent of the damage and engage directly with the affected farmers. Further evaluations will be undertaken as necessary to inform any additional support that may be required.

The Ministry extends its sympathies to the affected farmers and acknowledges the hardship resulting from the loss of crops, infrastructure, and investment. At the same time, the Ministry
remains concerned about unsafe land management practices, including the use of fire for land clearing and the burning of farm debris, which can significantly increase the risk of uncontrolled
bushfires.

In light of this incident, the Ministry is urging residents, farm labourers, and landowners to exercise extreme caution when disposing of vegetation and agricultural waste. Farmers are encouraged to adopt safer and more sustainable alternatives, such as composting and mulching, which contribute to improved soil fertility, moisture retention, and nutrient conservation.

Where the use of fire is deemed necessary, individuals are strongly advised to consult with the Fire and Ambulance Service before burning and to closely monitor weather conditions, particularly wind speed and direction, to reduce the risk of fires spreading beyond their intended area.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy remains committed to supporting the farming community and will continue to promote safe and sustainable agricultural practices that protect livelihoods, property, and the environment.
