⚠️ Have you ever met GIANT HOGWEED!? ⚠️ Heracleum mantegazzianum is probably one of the most feared plants in the UK, and for good reason too as it is one of very few plants here that is dangerous from touch alone. Brought over to England from south west Asia in the 19th century as a garden ornamental, Giant hogweed quickly became an established escapee and is now found all across the UK. It’s incredibly important to get to know this invasive but common plant so that you can avoid brushing against it on your summer walks, and to let your kids know what to avoid whilst they’re out playing. Any contact with the sap from Giant hogweed can cause severe burns, blisters and scarring - and all parts of the plant contain sap, so even touching the toxic hairs on the stem can cause painful reactions. Giant hogweed contains a high concentration of several potent linear furanocoumarins, including psoralen, bergapten, and xanthotoxin. These compounds are responsible for the plant’s severe phototoxic reactions, leading to intense skin burns, blisters, and long term sensitivity to sunlight - in some cases this can last for many years! Furanocoumarins are produced by many plants in the Apiacea (carrot family) as a defense mechanism against predators such as insects and mammals, but the severity of reactions to Giant hogweed sap is primarily due to the high levels and potency of the linear furanocoumarins, which cause more damage compared to other plants that might contain lower concentrations / less potent types of furanocoumarins. If you do come into contact with Giant hogweed, then it’s important to cover the affected area immediately to avoid exposure to the sun, and wash the skin thoroughly with cold water and soap as soon as you are able to. If the eyes are affected, rinse them for at least 15mins and seek medical attention asap 👁️ The stem and flower umbels are key identifying features to distinguish Giant hogweed from the friendlier Common hogweed, not so much the height… but please see comments for full 🆔 as I’m running out of room here 😄 I’ll be going into a bit more detail on giant v common in my next post so stay tuned if you’re interested! 💚
