How to take a proactive approach and plan a return to the workplace in a new, unknown, normal?

One country at a time, we will at our turn start planning the return to workplaces that will have changed. We have the opportunity to take control of the situation and organize a responsible re-opening. A successfully planned and executed return will ensure the safety of employees, but also engagement and motivation.

The questions remains: How?

To help you in this task, Open has invited two experienced industry leaders, Sizwekazi Jekwa Mdingi, Head of Communications, Absa Corporate and Investment Banking at Absa South Africa and Beenu Thomas, Director of Internal Communications at Carlsberg, to discuss what concrete actions they are taking to prepare for a responsible return.

Open's Anna Porko interviews Beenu and Sizwekazi, in a discussion on the factors contributing to what is needed of communications in the transition, and what we can -and should- do to address those needs.

You can expect concrete tips to help you take control of the return, on three different levels:
– Leadership communication
– Equipping managers
– On the floor

Today marks a full week of working from home for many people in Denmark and the world – including us at Open. We have learnt a lot working from 35 offices instead of two and would love to share how we are making this work. You know, it’s mostly about communicating, and if we may say so ourselves: we know a thing or two about that.

Here are our tips:

1. Don’t forget you’re a team! This is about culture and belonging. We start every morning with a 15-minute, all-Open meeting – virtually of course.

2. Remember that personal, social relationships matter too. We have gotten to know each other in a new way during this time, and it helps our relationships. One concrete thing we do is tour-de-chambers, where we take turns to show our colleagues our homes and how we have arranged work. Total favourite. Also, virtual shared lunches and coffee-breaks go a long way in keeping our extra-extroverts from going cuckoo.

3. Exceptional times require exceptional approaches. We are home-schooling our 49 kids and working at the same time, like superhumans! Or how was it again? Patience and understanding go a long way. Plus: routines. They keep us sane.

How have you arranged work? And, have you squeezed exercise into your routines? That could be the next thing for us!
