On Sunday, the Burkinabè military dissolved the government and ousted President Roch Kaboré. The Burkina Faso coup is the latest insurrection in the Sahel region following successful attempts made in recent years in neighbouring Mali, Chad, and Guinea.
Over the past years, the security situation in Burkina Faso has become increasingly volatile, with growing Islamist attacks resulting in over 2,000 casaulties and more than 1.5 million internally displaced persons. Militants linked with the Islamic State (IS) have increasingly used the country’s borderlands as a base for operations in the wider Sahel region. Discontent in the Burkinabè army has progressively grown as the government has failed to allocate more resources to counter the rising threat of Islamist militants.
Following the Burkina Faso coup, it is possible that the resulting security vacuum will soon be filled by emboldened Islamists, which in turn could trigger increased migration from West Africa to Europe, threaten stability in neighbouring countries, and put international mining operations at risk.

2022 has arrived and we at Guardian are excited for what the new year has in store. As a company focusing on security risk management, we don’t want you to be unprepared for what’s there to come, so we compiled a list of what we’re watching - our Top 5 Risks for 2022.
👉 COVID-19, Omicron and other variants, and the impact on both the Global (vaccinated) North and (unvaccinated) South.
👉Technology that has the potential to disrupt and polarize societies - disinformation campaigns, influence of algorithms, digital governance.
👉Russia vs. the West - Russia demands a restructuring of the European security architecture.
👉Political instability around the globe, e.g., in Myanmar, Afghanistan, or Ethiopia.
👉Key elections to come: Libya, Lebanon, Philippines, U.S. Midterms, Brazil, France.
This list is far from being exhaustive, but should give you an indication of what might be relevant in 2022. If you feel like you want to improve your own or your company’s preparedness for the risks and uncertainties that loom around the corner, don’t hesitate to reach out! Shoot us a message at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible to make sure that appropriate measures to mitigate the effects of the new year’s risks and crises are in check.
