One of the most common questions we get is Neo vs Ferrite. What is better? Why is it more expensive? Will I be louder? Will it get me a girlfriend? Really, we get asked this!! Neodymium Iron Boron, NdFeB, or Neo is a modern magnetic material that like everything else, has its benefits and drawbacks. Neo has a much higher magnetic energy density than ferrite which yields stronger motors for a given size/weight. But, it also less thermally stable than ferrite (heat it up past a point and magnetism does not fully return). It is also significantly more expensive than ferrite.

So you need to ask if any of these specifically make it better for your application? It might. Is weight reduction a goal? Then Neo wins. Is cost a concern? Then ferrite wins. Is cool factor a must? Then Neo. Thermal stability for monster demo runs? Ferrite.

Bottom line comes down to the Gauss density in the gap. If a ferrite motor and a Neo motor have the same gap geometry and Gauss density, then they will act the same with the same soft parts. We offer versions of each sub and can make them act identical if the Gauss is the same. No win there. We can also make a ferrite motor have as much gap Gauss as a neo (albeit a much heavier motor). Handle more power? This is not inherently a magnet type function (thermally ferrite wins, but it does not matter for burps). Neither is a clear winner. They both do the same thing in the same way.

Magnetism is magnetism and there is no clear benefit to the function of the speaker itself with all else being equal. Their are pros and cons to both, but they do not impede the general function of the speaker and it is left to the consumer to decide if one types performance outweighs the others value.

The Alpha series is back with a vengance. Our entry level line for Fi is back with some heavy duty upgrades. 8.75” Y35 magnet with a beefy 3” voice coil and dual spiders all mounted on a tough 12 spoke cast aluminum basket. Heavy duty cone and wide surround keep the excursion under control along with dual spiders.

The 2023 Alpha boasts 1000W power handling and the durability we are known for. Drawing assembly techniques from all the larger lines we made sure that our entry point to Fi is just as tough. Great sound quality and SPL from a stout little package. It comes in both 12” and 15” sizes and works in sealed, ported, 4th abs 6th order applications.
