Sixty years are hard to put into words. Sixty works are easier.
With „60 Years. 60 Works“, Edition Block marks its 60th anniversary with works from six decades in which editions appear not as mere reproductions, but as autonomous artistic creations. Over the decades, a wide range of formal and material expressions has emerged: prints, objects, artist’s books, records, and everything in between.

At KIF – Kunst im Fenster, Eva-Maria Schön’s „60 Years. 60 Meters, Brushstrokes“ picks up the idea of seriality in space. Its 60 meters also subtly echo the 60 years of Edition Block, unfolding through movement, reversal, and ever-changing constellations.

Presentation of the new edition:
The exhibition at EDITION BLOCK and KIF – KUNST IM FENSTER brings together works by Pravdoliub Ivanov (born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in 1964) from the past three decades. His installation Vehicles Dream, created in New York in 1998, takes the centre stage. The city that ‘never sleeps’ was the setting for Ivanov’s photographs of people sleeping in subway cars, exhausted by the rhythm of the city that they themselves help to maintain. By mounting the images on small wheels scattered throughout the space, he allowed visitors to rearrange them. Moving around in this way, the portraits appear as a symbol of collective exhaustion. The social metaphor of these alienated and isolated figures, created more than 25 years ago, has gained unexpected political relevance today, visible in their silent paralysis and metaphysical helplessness. 
As part of a renewed focus on Vehicles Dream a new edition based on the original photographs has been published this year by Edition Block. The images of the sleeping figures are arranged in varying configurations in different sets of five wheels each. The edition is being shown for the first time at KIF – Kunst im Fenster.

With her site-specific installation “Sol”, Sunah Choi (.sunah)transforms the 𝐊𝐈𝐅 window display into a space of glass and light. Eight seamlessly arranged glass panels fit precisely into the surface behind the window, filling its floor plan. They are both a “floor” (French: sol) and a large-format image.

In her work, Sunah Choi explores space, its perception, and its cultural encoding. She draws on the vocabulary of architecture as well as that of painting and sculpture. She is particularly interested in elements that structure or permeate space, such as windows, frames, or grids. In this way, “Sol” builds on the Edition “Karo”, conceived for Edition Block in 2020.

In parallel, Sunah Choi is showing new works at GROTTO (.berlin) in Hansaviertel under the title “Maquette”.

Mit ihrer ortsspezifischen Installation „Sol“ transformiert Sunah Choi das Schaufenster von KIF in einen Raum aus Glas und Licht. Acht nahtlos aneinandergelegte Glasplatten fügen sich passgenau in die Fläche hinter dem Fenster und füllen deren Grundriss aus. Sie sind zugleich „Boden” (franz. sol) als auch großformatiges Bild.
Sunah Choi beschäftigt sich in ihrer Arbeit mit Raum, seiner Wahrnehmung und seiner kulturellen Kodierung. Sie greift ebenso das Vokabular der Architektur wie das der Malerei und Skulptur auf. Von besonderem Interesse sind dabei jene Elemente, die den Raum gliedern oder durchdringen wie etwa Fenster, Rahmen oder Gitter.
So knüpft Sol an die im Jahr 2020 für die Edition Block konzipierte Edition Karo an.
Parallel zeigt Sunah Choi bei GROTTO (.berlin)im Hansaviertel neue Arbeiten unter dem Titel „Maquette“.

In der Rundfunksendung „Herr Sanders öffnet seinen Schallplattenschrank“ präsentierte Dirigent Franz Marszalek in den 1950er-Jahren wöchentlich „seltene, vergessene, vielleicht heute einmalige Kostbarkeiten“. Einer der Hörer war der junge René Block, der das Format mit großer Begeisterung verfolgte.

Wie einst Marszalek öffnet nun Block – der selbst gerne Dirigent geworden wäre – sein eigenes Archiv. Er gibt Einblicke in über 60 Jahre Tätigkeit als Galerist und Kurator.

Die Ausstellung zeigt ausgewählte Materialien, Publikationen und Ephemera – darunter Ausstellungsplakate und Einladungskarten – aus Blocks vielfältigem Wirken: Galerie, DAAD, IfA, Fridericianum, internationale Projekte. Viele der gezeigten Kataloge waren nie im Buchhandel erhältlich.

Ein besonderer Teil der Ausstellung ist eine Reihe persönlicher Künstlerporträts, die René Block im Lauf der Jahre aufgenommen hat – Ausdruck enger Zusammenarbeit und langjähriger Freundschaften.
