Milana [name changed] is 21 years old when the building she had been working in for just two days is hit directly by a Russian Iskander missile.

The stock in the shop protected her from a blast trauma, but unfortunately not from flying shrapnel.

Milana suffered severe injuries to her cervical spine. Despite an operation that has already been performed, the chances that she will be able to move her arms or walk again are slim.

Our team transported Milana and her mother on the 850-km journey from Dnipro to a rehabilitation center in Rivne. We wish them both great strength and hope for a substantial recovery despite everything.

On standby
Nearly three weeks have passed since the earthquake in Venezuela and our offer of assistance. We remain on standby and continue to monitor developments on the ground. Additional needs often only emerge in the aftermath of the acute crisis.

Thanks to the help of many volunteers, we are well prepared should a deployment still become necessary. So far, the capacities we offered to support the heavily strained healthcare system have not been requested by the Venezuelan authorities.

Meanwhile, clean-up efforts continue. Nearly 4,500 deaths have been confirmed so far, with tens of thousands still missing. Around 16,000 injured are placing additional strain on Venezuela's healthcare system, which was already weakened by economic and political crises.

That is why we responded immediately after the earthquake, offering support in the form of material and personnel for six treatment stations to care for the severely injured, as well as for specialized patient transports (MedEvacs).

The donations we have raised so far for Venezuela emergency relief will be passed on to the local, grassroots-democratic health and agricultural cooperative and Alternative Nobel Prize laureate Red Cecosesola. This ensures that the funds already benefit the people of Venezuela.

A functioning healthcare system isn't a given. Hospital closures, understaffed emergency services, cuts to psychotherapy: Germany's healthcare system is under growing strain, and the consequences reach far beyond medicine.

Access to care, regardless of income, is a cornerstone of a fair and democratic society. It's something we're reminded of on every mission, from Syria to Sudan, where such systems often don't exist at all.

Defending healthcare means defending social cohesion, and democracy itself.
