SOFT THOUGHT

from “dispersion of subjectivity” (2025). 34 unique texts on the front, uniform text on the back, set on oversized garments in 3 colors & styles (black hoodies, white long sleeve t-shirts, beige t-shirts), worn by the performers who moved throughout the space in a sonic choreography producing sound within the composition.

This list highlights emergent subjectivities via semantics, a tension between narration and simulation, addressing themes of subjectivity as mediated through contemporary technological, environmental and spiritual dimensions, with a proportion incorporating themes from eschatology and death studies, thus spanning subjectivity in life and subjectivity after life. The words are all existing niche terminology, jargon or neologisms, with an intended playfulness in their density.

Blessed to have such a righteous group of performers in Luxembourg!

dispersion of subjectivity (I), 2025
autostereogram, digital print
88 x 233 cm

the original water color by Farah is transformed by digital aberrations resulting from the creation of an autostereogram, wherein a hidden layer of depth emerges through a specific manner of viewing the image.

DRIFT

these 34 iterations of figures formed the basis for the generation of musical material for the performance, for example the work’s main rhythmic figures in 17/8, groups of 7-3-5-2, 2-5-3-7, etc, and macro summations…

this one dedicated to the brilliant Gerhard Schütze (d. 2017). miss you, G!

dispersion of subjectivity

by LABOUR (Farahnaz Hatam & Colin Hacklander) with percussionist Yi Ping of Percussion des Strasbourg

Newly commissioned large scale performance work at MUDAM curated by Léon Kruijswijk with curatorial assistance by Nicole Wittmann .

Multi-level spatialized 15 channel sound composition, two 'sixxen' (large metallophones conceived by Xenakis) & percussion, 34 unique garments, group performers and spatialized percussion, two new artworks: autostereogram, digital prints.

Our format of 'sonic activations' has brought us to incredible spaces, but this grand and porous architecture is really something ✨

Thank you to Percussion des Strasbourg for the collaboration and for the amazing instruments ✨

Very grateful for the trust and support by Leon and Nicole. Such a great pleasure to realize this work with an incredible group of people - unforgettable 🖤✨

Hats and jewelry by Kuboraum / Innerraum 🖤

Organized by Mudam Luxembourg in collaboration with Philharmonie Luxembourg, during Luxembourg Art Week .

LABOUR x Family Ndiaye Rose

such an enormous pleasure to realize this project, August 2024 - our hearts are full!

A tribute to the musical legacy of Doudou Ndiaye Rose. The best way to live is to prepare for death.

The opening section of the piece is an adaptation of Doudou’s drum composition for electronic drums and SuperCollider, while the closing section features the full composition with sabars, drumset and SuperCollider. The expanded middle section features a spatial intervention wherein a mass of performers enacts an energetic orientation through word and movement, first by chanting the phrases “next time, die consciously” and “death levels us all” and next through a sequence of “bodily chemical excitations”.
