Connecting and reconnecting at Cannes! CAFTPro member, Lesley-Anne Macfarlane links up with our friend and ally Themba Bhebhe.

CAFTPro link-up in Cannes! Our members and are both at attending the marché along with several other Caribbean filmmakers from around the region.

Thanks to the support of the diversity and inclusion initiative of the European Film Market (EFM), CAFTPro is participating in the market for the second year in a row. Our members, Lei Gonzàlez, Lìa Báez, Letay Williams and Aiko Roudette (not pictured) have been working the market, attending screenings and networking to bring visibility themselves and their projects, as well as on behalf of CAFTPro and the Caribbean screen industries.

European Film Market - EFM

Huge congratulations to CAFTPro member, producer Lei Gonzàlez, whose film, Colosal, is having its world premiere at the Berlinale!
Every family has its secrets, says director Nayibe Tavares-Abel. Those of her own are intimately interwoven with the history of the Dominican Republic – and with the political violence and frustration inherent within it. Tavares-Abel is an election observer for the 2020 presidential elections in the Dominican Republic. 30 years earlier, in May 1990, her grandfather Froilán Tavares, a renowned lawyer, was appointed chair of the electoral commission – in the hope of a fair democratic process and the end to dictatorship under Joaquín Balaguer. However, the election was overshadowed by suspicions of electoral fraud levelled at Tavares. Archive material shows the hopes and disappointments that accompanied the elections, while a spontaneous survey on the streets of Santo Domingo reveals fundamentally different perspectives on the re-elected long-term ruler Balaguer. Colosal is the self-examination of a younger generation, autobiographical and sincere, a trans-generational family portrait caught between fear and trauma. A crash course in the history of the Dominican Republic and democracy as such. A filmic attempt to find peace, dare to do something new, get active.

The briefing will be presented by industry expert, Renee Robinson, who will introduce session participants to the EFM and share insights into what you can expect, how you should prepare and ways to navigate the market.

We had a time! At the CAFTPro Happy Hour we welcomed over 75 guests to the Caribbean Umbrella stand, who were eager to learn more about Caribbean film and television! There were heads of film festivals, film curators and programmers, film organisation representatives, producers, directors, distributors and more! Our aim was to get folks talking and thinking about our region in the context of the international industry — we think we succeeded! ..........................
